Theodor Fontane (30 December 1819 – 20 September 1898) was a Germannovelist and poet, regarded by many as the most important 19th-century German-languagerealist author.

One of his novels “Effi Briest” and is generally described as Fontane’s masterpiece. This painting, a diptych and based on the book, measures 150×200 cm and forms a modern aesthetic composition of Theodor Fontane and Elisabeth Freiin von Plotho “Else” during a fictitious encounter/dialogue, sitting on a garden bench with the Zerben Castle of Plotho before 1945 in the background.
